Charles Leclerc and Ferrari made the perfect start to the weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as the championship leader set the fastest time in FP1 just ahead of team mate Carlos Sainz.
Leclerc set a time of 1m 19.828s under the searing Spanish sun to lead his team mate and home favourite Sainz by 0.079s. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished the session in P3, 0.336s behind the Monegasque driver.
Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished the session in P4 and P6, despite the seven-time world champion suffering from a DRS issue. The two Britons were sandwiched by the other home favourite, Fernando Alonso in P5.
FP1: Leclerc leads Sainz and Verstappen as Ferrari begin Spanish GP weekend on the front foot
FP1 also saw the first race weekend appearances for Nyck De Vries and Juri Vips, and they finished the session in P18 and P20 respectively.
