We join Schumacher on the 51st lap, by which stage he had worked his way up to second place, seven seconds adrift of Gerhard Berger’s lead McLaren. That represented a three-place swing for the Benetton driver who had started fifth, but then benefitted when Nigel Mansell spun out of contention and Ayrton Senna, Riccardo Patrese and Martin Brundle all retired when in front of him.
