Magnussen drops two places after post-race penalty for Perez pass

Haas’s Kevin Magnussen has dropped from 12th to 14th in the Monaco Grand Prix results after stewards decided he had gained an unfair advantage by going off track during a battle with Sergio Perez.

Perez attempted to pass Magnussen at the chicane during the second half of the race, diving down the inside on entry and drawing fully alongside the Dane – who then stayed ahead by effectively cutting the chicane.

After a post-race investigation, stewards handed Magnussen a five-second time penalty, dropping him behind not only Perez, but also Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg, who moved up to 12th and 13th places respectively as a result.

“I made a move on Magnussen, which I felt was a fair move, but he cut the chicane and kept the position,” said Perez. “In the end getting ahead of Magnussen may have changed our result, so I think he should have given me the position back.”

The decision marked the end of a tough afternoon for Magnussen, who was also given one penalty point on his Super License by the stewards. He started fifth on the grid, but plummeted down the order after losing out by pitting under the safety car.
