A mixed-up grid for Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix has added even further spice to the championship race, as leader Oscar Piastri starts only seventh for McLaren, after on-form team mate Lando Norris took a dominant pole. And between them, lurking ominously in fifth, is the Red Bull of title outsider Max Verstappen.
However, the key protagonists will have plenty else to worry about in the 71 laps of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after the resurgent Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton powered to second and third on the grid, with Mercedes’ George Russell also outpacing Verstappen to clinch fourth.
Kimi Antonelli starts sixth in the second Mercedes ahead of Piastri, with Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar, Haas’ Oliver Bearman and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda completing the top 10. All are ahead of Williams’ Carlos Sainz, who dropped from a strong P7 to P12 thanks to his five-place penalty for colliding with Antonelli at the last round.
