Russell reflects on ‘different’ feeling at Mercedes after departure of ‘huge personality’ Hamilton

George Russell has taken a moment to reflect on life at Mercedes without Lewis Hamilton, following the seven-time World Champion’s departure from the squad.

Russell and Hamilton were team mates at the Silver Arrows from 2022 to 2024, with their partnership coming to an end thanks to the latter’s blockbuster Ferrari move.

At this weekend’s pre-season test in Bahrain, Russell was asked about the feeling within the Mercedes camp – and what has changed – while Hamilton begins the next chapter of his career.

“Naturally, it does feel different, of course,” said Russell during Wednesday’s driver press conference in Sakhir. “Lewis is such a huge personality on and off track.

“But I think everybody within the team is very much excited for this next chapter, really. As the team look back on fond memories, I also feel grateful to have had that chance, being his team mate for three years and learning so much from him. Also going head-to-head with him directly.

“It kind of feels like the end of a chapter, but then you’re looking forward to the next journey. It’s very much for us and Mercedes… we’re looking forward and not backwards."

As for Mercedes’ prospects in the campaign ahead, Russell made some positive noises about the W16 after watching new team mate Kimi Antonelli top the morning session – and before posting the second-fast lap in the afternoon outing.

Asked if he thinks Mercedes have made a step forward with the W16, and if the atmosphere in the team is good, he replied: “Yeah, absolutely. It’s obviously a fresh start for all of us. We’re just excited to see what the season will bring.

“[Wednesday] morning was a solid start for the team, the car’s handling well. It’s obviously very different conditions here compared to what we’re used to – it’s very windy.

“We also know that last season, for example, there were such massive fluctuations in performance from all the teams… if you come away from this test quickest, fourth-quickest, third-quickest, whatever, you may not be able to read too much into it.

“Nevertheless, the car seems to be performing well.”
