Surtees awarded CBE in New Year’s Honours
John Surtees, the only man to win world championships on both four and two wheels, has been awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in Britain’s New Year Honours List.
Surtees, who won seven world motorcycling crowns before claiming six Grands Prix victories and the 1964 world drivers’ title, was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1959 and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008.
However the 81-year-old has now been honoured with the more senior title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his considerable contribution to the field of motorsport.
