The world of F1 has enjoyed a touch of Hollywood over the past couple of seasons, with filming of F1 The Movie taking place at a number of Grands Prix weekends.
The fictional APXGP team have been featuring in the pit lane, on the grid and even occasionally on track – with the real life F1 stars themselves often providing the background action for the film.
As such, there have been plenty of ‘behind the scenes’ features ahead of the release of the film, which is hitting cinemas on June 25, with a North American release date of June 27.
The film tells the story of Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes, a former F1 star who is brought back into the sport alongside up and coming hotshot Joshua ‘Noah’ Pearce (Damson Idris) at the APXGP team.
Both Pitt and Idris did a lot of their own driving, with Lewis Hamilton providing plenty of coaching alongside his role as producer for the movie.
The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and is a non-stop action-filled ride through the world of F1.
The APXGP team needed to be integrated onto the grid to make sure many of the scenes were as realistic as possible, and the fans were able to glimpse the APXGP cars at a number of races last season including the final weekend of the year in Abu Dhabi.
But how did the film crew manage to create such realistic racing, and how much of it was real?
Watch the video below to find out just how the racing scenes were created before you go and watch them for real in the cinema.
Access was a big factor, with the film itself requiring a huge crew – who had to slot into F1 weekends, which themselves are already stuffed full of mechanics, engineers and team personnel.
The F1 drivers had to focus on their own jobs, their races, their season – while the film crew had to focus on creating a realistic movie that would thrill cinema-goers worldwide.
Balancing the two was not easy, but you can watch the clip below to see how it all worked.
The story itself is one of an underdog – Sonny Hayes, a former F1 star whose moment has passed him by, or has it?
F1 is full of incredible real-life stories of incredible comebacks or winning against the odds. Hamilton nearly won the title in his debut season against seasoned pro Fernando Alonso, which was an unbelievable story in itself.
Then there was Brawn GP and Jenson Button's World Championship in 2009, or going further back in the history books, Niki Lauda returning to fight for the World Championship title after suffering horrific injuries in 1976.
Plenty of drivers have made comebacks too – Alonso himself is back on the grid after taking time out to race Le Mans, and is as fit as ever despite being in his 40s.
The F1 drivers were given a chance to watch the film in Monaco at an exclusive screening, and their reactions were hugely positive.
Much of the grid turned up for the screening, which had an 'end of term' feeling as the F1 drivers filed into the cinema and spent time joking with each other as well as being on their best behaviour.
But once the lights went down, their attention was trained on the screen – and they seemed to love the film that highlighted just what they do for a living.
F1 The Movie is now playing in cinemas around the world, starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon and many more.
