With the two ultra-quick McLarens of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard locking out the front row and Michael Schumacher lurking just behind in third, very few people would have bet on Eddie Irvine – sixth on the grid and yet to win in F1 – to have taken victory in the 1999 Australian Grand Prix.
And yet somehow, he did. And to find out exactly how he did it, you can watch the race in full in the video above. Click here for a reminder of the state of play in F1 at the time, or simply settle in to watch some classic late 90s action, complete with Murray Walker and Martin Brundle commentary. Enjoy!
Of course Irvine wasn't the only shock winner in that 1999 season – Johnny Herbert also managed to pull off an unexpected victory for Stewart at the European Grand Prix, and you can catch highlights of that classic right here.
