The McLaren driver, who leads the Drivers' Championship, made contact with the Wall of Champions after the opening 20 minutes of the one-hour session on Saturday.

The Australian immediately backed off having destroyed the right-rear wheel rim on his car and slowly recovered back to the pits as a red flag was deployed to recovery debris.
Having undergone checks, Piastri was sent back out shortly after and finished the session in eighth.
Just moments before Piastri's incident, Nico Hulkenberg had a lucky escape himself at the same spot after spinning his Kick Sauber through the corner before continuing unscathed.
