WATCH: Ride onboard with Piastri for his spectacular pole position lap in Spain
The contest for pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix went down to the wire between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, but it was the former who executed the fastest lap of the weekend when it mattered to emerge ahead of his team mate.
Heading into Qualifying, McLaren were evidently the team to beat as they had topped every practice session around the Barcelona circuit, but it was uncertain which driver would prevail until Piastri clocked a rapid time of 1m 11.546s on his final attempt.
Norris had marginally edged ahead after the first flying laps in Q3 after he tried to pick up a tow from Piastri, who was coming to the end of his lap and labelled his team mate's move as "cheeky" over the radio.
But in the end, the Briton found himself 0.209s away from the pole sitter's time, which is the biggest gap on the timesheets between P1 and P2 this season so far.
