WATCH: Schumacher returns to F1 action with first run in Mercedes’ W14

Mick Schumacher has returned to the wheel of a Formula 1 car by getting a run in the Mercedes W14 during this week’s Pirelli tyre test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Mercedes and Ferrari have stayed on in Barcelona following last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix to help F1 tyre supplier Pirelli develop their compounds and constructions for next year.
After George Russell drove the W14 on Tuesday, new-for-2023 Mercedes reserve driver Schumacher got his first run in the machine on Wednesday, marking his return to an F1 cockpit.
Schumacher made his F1 debut with Haas in 2021 and stayed on for 2022, giving him valuable knowledge of the sport’s new ground effect cars, but he dropped off the grid after being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg at the end of the campaign.
Schumacher has been a regular visitor to the F1 paddock this season in his back-up role, which also includes work in Mercedes’ simulator back at base in Brackley.
Russell and team mate Lewis Hamilton both referenced Schumacher’s virtual efforts following Mercedes’ first double podium finish of the season on Sunday, which helped to lift the team above Aston Martin and into second in the constructors’ standings.
