The last Canadian Grand Prix in 2019 delivered an incredible race – with the drama continuing well after the chequered flag. Lewis Hamilton won for Mercedes, his seventh victory around the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. But he didn’t actually finish first on the road, with Sebastian Vettel crossing the line in P1 for Ferrari but being demoted post-race.
Those two had enjoyed a brilliant battle on track for the win, which culminated in the German running off-track, the stewards then judging that he’d squeezed his rival on his return, earning him a time penalty that cost him the victory. That wasn’t the end of it, though, with Vettel famously switching the first and second place boards in parc ferme, in what is now regarded as one of the most amusing examples of driver frustration in F1 history.
While it was all eyes on those two up front, behind Lando Norris suffered a bizarre failure in his maiden Montreal race, while Canada also delivered strong drives from Charles Leclerc and home favourite Lance Stroll.
