Yes, the Max Verstappen versus Lewis Hamilton narrative dominated the arc of the season, from their first showdown in Bahrain all the way through to the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

But there were fascinating storylines up and down the grid too: Lando Norris nearly winning his first race in Sochi, or Esteban Ocon actually winning his first race at the Hungaroring; Fernando Alonso’s return to the sport after two years away, in the same year that the Schumacher name poignantly returned to the grid; plus there was retribution for Daniel Ricciardo, as he returned to the top step of an F1 podium for the first time in three years at Monza.
